A four-year-old girl, who cut her knee after kneeling on broken glass while watching a concert at her crèche, has been awarded €25,000 damages against a recreation centre.

Judge Matthew Deery heard in the Circuit Civil Court yesterday (Tues) that Ellen Hackett, of Hazelwood Court, Artane, Dublin, had been kneeling on a floor with other play-school children in June 2011.

Ellen, who sued through her mother, Jennifer, had suffered a deep cut to her right knee which resulted in her having to be taken to Temple Street Children’s Hospital for treatment.

Counsel for Ellen, who is now aged six, said crèche owners Artane Beaumont Family Recreation Centre, Kilmore Road, Dublin, had agreed to The Injuries Board assessing compensation.

Judge Deery, who heard Ellen had been left with a scar, approved the Board’s assessment of €25,000 damages with €1,931 expenses plus legal costs.
